For our first weekend in New Zealand, our hosts for orientation weekend set up a caving adventure for all us Americans. These caves were amazing. We had never repeled (absailed) before, and this excursion suited us as a great introduction to what this place has to offer. We chose to take the "dry cave" route to save me from my cold and to provide a tad more comfort. The first leg of the trip we repeled 100 feet or so through a tiny rock crevase that barely had room for our bodies--spiders making homes in the cracks. This particulair cave is known for its formations of flowrock, stalagtites, and stalagmites. We couldn't have been more excited. (I know Wendy, amatuer spelunking b.s.)
We will be writing more when we get settled in, in Dunedin. This is all it has been cracked up to be and I don't think this will ever get boring.
